dr. maryann davis is a nationally recognized expert on services for youth
with significant mental health needs during the transition to adulthood. in
1996 she brought the problems of transition aged youth to public attention
when she published the cornerstone papers reviewing the research on the
transitioning population, and summarizing the conflict between the
developmental needs of the transitioning population and policies and
practices at the federal, state, and local levels of human service and
education agencies. in 2000 she co-edited the first comprehensive book about
services for this population. in 2004 she has testified before the u.s.
congress on the transitioning population. she recently worked with members
of congress to develop legislation to better address the needs of this
population.
dr. davis’ research program has had funding from the national institute
of mental health, the substance abuse and mental health services
administration, and the national institute on disability and rehabilitation
research. she is the director of the nidrr-funded research and training
center on learning and working during the transition to adulthood
(h133b090018). in addition she is the principal investigator of two
projects, one of which is to develop an intervention to reduce offending and
increase positive functioning in emerging adults with serious mental illness
and recent justice system involvement (r34 mh081374-01), the other is to
develop an intervention that enhances treatment retention in transition age
youth attending outpatient psychotherapy (rc1mh088542-02). dr. davis is also
co-investigator of a study to investigate the role of primary health care in
mental health care continuity in emerging adults (r34mh081303; pi slade).
